The weekend
started when four cars and
their occupants met at Brough on Friday morning. The route to
Pickering went via Tan Hill, Leyburn and Rippon and it seemed
that there had been a mass suicide pact for rabbits as the road from Tan
Hill was littered for miles with hundreds of their corpses.
A lunch stop was
made at Fountains Abbey and included a walk round
the ruined abbey and the beautiful gardens. Umbrellas were only required on
the way back to the car! The cars then travelled on to The Olde Manse
Hotel at
Pickering.
On Saturday the
party travelled in two cars to visit the Ryedale Folk Museum at
Hutton-Le-Hole. This proved to be a very interesting mix of
by-gone artifacts and trades combined with the horticulture of rare
types of vegetables from the past and the keeping of old species of pigs
and fowl.
The afternoon was
spent at Thornton-Le-Dale, the ladies went window shopping and the men
got lost in the hidden depths of sheds full of classic cars and motoring
paraphernalia of the car museum.
On Saturday
evening three more members joined the party. After a very good
dinner Keith chaired two of his excellent quizzes (one general knowledge
the other motoring).
Sunday morning saw
eight Solway Jaguar Cars on display at Newby Hall for the J.E.C.
Northern Day Show. The event, though not helped by the weather,
proved to be very spectacular by the number and quality of the cars on
display. Nigel Thorley gave an excellent commentary on the various
cars entering the show ring. They were all powered by the
legendary XK engine that is now 60 years old.
It was an
excellent weekend. Our thanks go the Keith for arranging the
routes, accommodation & quizzes, Brian for organising our display at
Newby Hall and Ken for transporting and erecting the flags, banners and
gazebo (a haven when the rain came).
