Roundhill Rendezvous  2006

6th August 2006

B.B.Q.  & Digger Competition

The weather forecasters got it wrong again, too bright in the morning resulted in the rain’s progress, mainly in the form of light showers dampening the ground but not he spirit of members who attended.  There was plenty at stake and soon we were all tucking in to good food and good company in wonderful surroundings albeit the views of the distant Scottish Hills and Solway Plain were obscured.  Lorraine and Graham had added complementary wine and savoury dips; Ruth Monkhouse brought along a much appreciated home made trifle.  Those who got the chance to sample it were full of praise. The promised ‘open tops’ were absent but the gazebos provided plenty of shelter and they were only showers.

We were a little later in trying out our skills on Graham’s digger. A slight variation on the theme of last year, we had a golf ball placed in the digger bucket, this had to be lifted and deposited in one of several buckets ranged round the machine.

The smaller the bucket the higher the points, the maximum of 100 points went to anyone who got two golf balls sitting in the rim of an upturned galvanised pale. Ron set the pace by achieving this on his second try.  Brian Green equalled this shortly afterwards.  The cost was £1 a go towards club funds.  I made quite a contribution but failed miserably to equal them.  In the end £23 was put in the pot in total.

I would like to complement the Ladies who climbed into the cab and gave it their best shots, Jean Wilson, Angela Gibson, Lorraine Graham all scored points. Gill Robinson was the late comer who eventually scooped the accolade as ladies Champion.  I never saw a play off between Ron and Brian but in the event the prize for the gents went to Brian.  I think Lorraine may have been a little apprehensive about doing too well, after all there are a lot of drainage ditches to dig out round the farm.
