September 2003

Once again we near the end of the "Jaguar season" and this end of year run, organised by Alex and Carol Boswell, was a classic.  Around 12 vehicles assembled at the start point of Reghed where we partook of the traditional coffee and chat before setting off on the run following the Tulip style route instructions.  Traveling via Ullswater, Dockray and Troutbeck we moved out onto the A66 and branched off at Braithwaite into the beautiful Newlands Valley.  The sun was with us so far and the scenery, after recent rain, was just a picture.  A short photo stop, for some, on top of Newlands Pass (and to allow engines to cool off a little) then downhill to the Fish Hotel in Buttermere for a comfort stop and an exhibition of bird calls by Ken Jardine before proceeding up the valley past Lowswater. Scale Hill, Fangs Brow and on towards Ennerdale where we drove over Cold Fell and back onto the A595 at Calderbridge.

Arriving at Muncaster we were given our entrance tags before moving the cars to a prime location right outside the castle front door where we were welcomed by Mr Duff Pennington who passed subtle comment "I've always admired Jaguars but I've never wanted one".  With rain threatening we moved quickly, with tables and chairs, onto the terrace for a picnic lunch. After a short  rain break we all moved on to view the Castle and it's magnificent gardens and owl sanctuary.  The "Bird of Prey" show was interesting and the sheer size of the various owls is a sight to see.

The Castle and it's owl breeding program is a credit to the Pennington's and a treasure for the County and we saw it at it's best.  After a short afternoon tea break in the castle laundry we then dispersed to various parts of Cumbria.
