29th September 29 2002.
An annual club run takes place each year just prior to the onset of our famed winter weather. Last year at Holker Hall. This year we assembled at the Rheged Centre near Penrith and 13 Jaguars, pictured below, departed after the mandatory morning coffee, on a leisurely jaunt to Coniston via Troutbeck, Vale of St John, Thirlmere Lake, Grasmere, Tarn Howes and into Coniston for a picnic alongside the lake near Brantwood, the home of John Ruskin. . The weather, while not sunny, was kind and a great day was enjoyed by all who attended. In total 13 cars were on show and made a good display on the car park of Brantwood. A late arrival was Graham Calvin-Thompson with his latest acquisition, an immaculate, low mileage, two tone 420G. More information on this magnificent vehicle will be sought for a future news update but it can be seen on the "Our Vehicles" page of this web site.
No one managed to get lost on the trip from Rheged to Coniston using Alex Boswells "Tulip Style" directions, although John and Jessie Oliver managed more than one complete circumnavigation of Grasmere Village before eventually finding the route to Coniston. Ken Jardine too managed to start first but finish last even though he had three navigators, Andrew Jardine, an early arriver, was beginning to wonder where his lunch was.
After the picnic we all visited the home of John Ruskin and even heard an impromptu piano recital from non other than club member Bryan Gibson (a man with hidden talents). We then moved off and onto a lake ferry for a guided tour and commentary about the life and times of the famous Campbell family and their many attempts at world land and water speed records. The demise and recovery of Bluebird was fascinating and being on the lake at the exact spot where Donald perished, was quite a moment for reflection.
Many thanks must go to Alex Boswell and Carol for organizing a great day out and one we will all remember for some time. There is something about driving Jaguars along scenic narrow English roads that makes it all worthwhile.
