Eight members and a mixture of Jaguars models assembled for a 10am start at the small farming hamlet of Winton, which is just off the A 685 Brough to Kirkby Stephen road, and is home for Alex Boswell and partner Carol.
We left Winton for Kirkby Stephen where we turned left onto the road to Nateby then left again onto the B6270 road to Keld, Thwaite, Muker, Reeth, Leyburn and for lunch at the Wensleydale Heifer pub. A few of us took a short diversion at Thwaite to see the "Buttertubs" an unusual geological formation caused by water erosion of the limestone rock. Passing through Gunnerside was a good reason to say we will return and take more time to explore this old lead mining town which was thriving in Roman times.
On to Feetham where we forked left at he Punch Bowl pub for Langthwaite where more lead mining was evident and eventually to the "water splash" which was made famous as the opening scene of "All Creatures Great and Small", this is James Herriot country and is a picture. After a photo stop we made a dash for the Heifer where everyone was ready for lunch. John and Jessie Oliver had mistaken the starting time instructions and were there to greet us.
We were lucky to be able to partake of lunch as the pub had been hard hit by a flash flood on the Friday and they had only just got themselves dried out in time for the club arriving. A nice lunch, a glass of wine, a poke around the cars and we were off for the "Forbidden Corner" a folly created to entertain the owners children and now open to the public and Jaguar drivers too.
What is it? well it is a sort of maze come adventure come challenge. Following paths and passing through many gates and passages was, depending upon how you looked at it, a challenge aided by a booklet which identified many clues to help you on your way. Passing into a small castle like structure, through tiny tunnels, through many more doors, onto rotating floors, yet more doors waterfalls and spitting statues until eventually we all made it out and into the cafe for a welcome coffee. Certainly not the normal type of maze and well worth a visit if you are in the Leyburn area. Bryan Gibson tried his hand at diving into a rose bed to avoid an ankle biter (child) but all he got for his troubles was a thorn in the nose and of course everyone thought it highly funny.
After all the exercise we moved onto the waterfalls at Ayesgarth where one member appeared to be going for a dip and another took the time for a short snooze.
Time was now getting on and we departed for home via Hawes which is another pretty dales town well worth a visit on another day. Traffic in the form of a slow bus hindered our way back to Kirkby Stephen but the scenery passing the route of the Carlisle to Settle railway made it a pleasurable drive.
A 12 hour day and some 230 miles of high class Jaguar motoring in ideal weather and on interesting roads made this a day to remember. Many thanks must go to Keith Robinson and family for the making of this day. Keith supplied us all with route maps and a set of guide notes pointing out all the areas of interest. Well done Keith you did your home county proud.
For those of you who missed out on this great day maybe the photos below will convey our pleasure. Do make the effort though and come with us next time, the more the merrier and we made an impressive sight, and talking point, for the many day trippers on our route.
