Club member Roger Frank and his fellow Rotarian, John Taylor, took part
in a humanitarian project in 2008. They had to
obtain a vehicle for under £100, spend no more than £15 on it and then
drive it across the Sahara to Bamako, the capital of Mali (the worlds 4th
poorest country) then donate the vehicle to a charity.
A Transit Van was converted into a Pink Ice Cream Van then filled with
half a ton of goods including pens, pencils, thermometers, footballs and
sewing machines.
They left Cumbria on 11th January and their journey, of 6707
miles, took them through many places including Spain, Gibraltar,
Tangiers, The Atlas Mountains, Marrakech and Timbuktu. The goods were
distributed at various places on the way and they finally donated the
Ice Cream Van when they arrived at journeys end at Mali. The treated
themselves to ice cream at notable landmarks on route!
